Weather and/or road conditions will change as rallies progress. The allure of the rally racing genre is to clearly see just how far somewhat regular cars can be pushed, often in absolutely unique settings and circumstances.Īlso, strategy is a central tenet of rally car racing, as races take several days. We’re talking difficult terrains, incredibly winding tracks, god-awful weather conditions, and/or all of the above. Moreover – and even with updated controls – WRC 8 is clearly intended for wheel setups, the controller a distant second thought.īefore we go any deeper however, let’s begin with an obvious question for many (including myself, until this review): what exactly is ‘rally racing,’ and why should I care? Unlike traditional and/or urban racers, rally car racing pits semi-regular vehicles in impossible driving situations. While WRC 8 allows for a more entry level friendly experience, it is unabashed in punishing early and often along the way. This includes infusing either strategy aspects to arcade racers (where cars can be upgraded/tweaked with accompanying physics) or a simplified control mechanic for simulation oriented ones (allowing for easier jump-in).īigben Interactive’s WRC 8, or World Rally Championship 8, falls on the latter end. Won a Special Stage in Simulation setting in any off-line mode. While console racing games tend to exclusively fall into either the arcade or sim bins, there’s been a recent and welcome trend of the meshing of the two. Finally, make sure you do this on a very short track as poor gear changing will quickly destroy your engine. I recommend you change the difficulty to Easy to make up for this added difficulty. To change it, go to the Main Menu, and then Options, then Gameplay. On one of these, you'll want to win the Special Stage with simulation settings turned on. If you didn't miss one, the % for Around the World and Explorer should be equal (for instance, after completing 7 rallies completely, each will show 53%). Alternatively, you can check the achievement tracker after you complete all the courses in each rally. A lot of people do miss one, so this is a very good idea.

I recommend you get out a sheet of paper and mark off each Special Stage that you complete, just to make sure you don't miss one. Your goal is to complete a race on every single Special Stage in each rally. There are a few achievements to unlock in Quick Stage. You can make a change to pop the achievement and then change it back to keep it at default if you wish. There is one achievement for tuning your car. If you've minimal knowledge of how to tune a car, I'd suggest just changing the tires to match the surface of the course. This new series allows you to manually configure your car. For reference, I picked the Eurolamp World Rally Team. I can't help you much with which one to pick since your choices are based on your performance in the Junior Rally. You won't finish them all, so don't worry about it too much. It also changes which of the six remaining rallies you play. Your team selection changes which repeats you have. This series will repeat some of the rallies you've already done. Which contract you choose doesn't matter much. If you won the junior, you should be adequately prepared for this.

This series involves faster cars and is slightly harder. To restart, when selecting your next contract, scroll all the way to the right and pick the Junior one. You'll eventually need to win the junior series, and it won't get easier. If you didn't get it, you can continue on or restart. If you can't get it close to 46 after your first race, no worries. Once you press for automatic, you can press to repair other parts of your car. For this one, I recommend trying to get it right at 46 minutes so you only have a 20 second penalty. There's a second repair achievement for repairing going over the budget. Repairing for the first time gets you an achievement.

The game is fairly intelligent at picking decent choices. In general, the easiest option is simply to press for automatic repairs. The repairs cannot ever be for more than 60 minutes. If they exceed 45 minutes, you get a time penalty (which can be rather significant). You can repair your car to fix the issue, but WRC rules give your team only 45 minutes to do so. Your car takes real damage during each race that will have a negative effect on your performance. Back in your Motorhome, you'll probably want to repair before heading to your next race.
